Is mouthwash necessary for your dental hygiene routine?

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED if mouthwash is actually a necessary part of your dental hygiene routine and which one should you use? Mouthwash is an integral part of daily oral care and we will tell you why.

What Purpose Does Mouthwash Serve?

We all know the importance of brushing and flossing in maintaining healthy teeth and gum. You may be wondering: “Why do I need to complicate things with a mouthwash?”
The many uses and purposes of mouthwashes includes:
  • Relief of bad breath
  • Aid in prevention of tooth decay
  • Reduction of microorganism intraorally
  • Prevention or reduction of gingivitis (the early stage of gum disease)
  • Reduction of tartar build up

Your favorite dental hygienist JANICE answers some commonly asked questions!

What are the different types of mouthwashes? What are their purposes?

There are many different types of mouthwashes on the shelves today. The three types are cosmetic, therapeutic, and preventative. Cosmetic rinses aid in the removal of some extrinsic stains. The active ingredients in therapeutic rinses have antimicrobial properties. Preventative rinses will have fluoride, which is an anticavity ingredient found in most toothpastes.

Who should rinse with mouthwash?

Everyone can benefit from the regular use of mouthwash on a regular basis. It is important to use a mouthwash that is beneficial for you individually. This is why it is important to visit your dental professional regularly so they can recommend dental products based on your needs.

In what order should I brush, floss, or rinse?

The order is not important as long as all 3 get done.

Rinsing with mouthwash is not meant to replace daily brushing and flossing! The use of a mouthwash is an adjunct to brushing and flossing and NOT a replacement. If you have any more questions about mouthwash, let us know.

Thank you for your trust in our practice!
Remember, here at Cosmetic Dental Associates, perfecting your smile is our focus.

Healthy teeth sparkle. Your toothpaste doesn't need to!

Please be aware of what has become a big concern for many dentists in the United States including our practice Cosmetic Dental Associates.

In the last few years Crest Toothpaste has been placing blue beads in their toothpaste to make it sparkle.

Come to find out, these beads are actually polypropylene plastic.

There appears not be any research that says if it's okay or not to have these in your toothpaste.

Regardless we're starting to see patients show up for their cleaning with these blue beads around their gums!.

This is something the public should know about.

For more information visit the link below or call us at 713-781-2800.

We're pleased to announce our practice is now using the Oral ID Cancer detection system. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation Oral Cancer is survivable up to 90% of the time when caught in the first two stages. The problem is people rarely get checked for Oral Cancer. The new system uses "fluorescence technology" to light up possible cancerous and precancerous areas. It's quick to use and doesn't hurt. In addition if there is a possible problem, the system can gather pics and additional info to pass along to another Doctor if needed. If you're interested in an exam including Oral Cancer check call 713-781-2800 today.

Can Teeth Whitening Hurt Your Dental Health?

Today's fashion highlights white teeth as part of the modern look of attractiveness. Can this go too far and hurt your dental health?

The answer is yes. Tooth whitening can cause pain and irritation. This is your mouth warning you that something isn't right.

According to Linda C. Niessen, D.M.D., professor at Texas A&M Health Science a sensitive reaction to white strips is more common among younger people (20s-30s), people who have erosion or gum disease but can happen to anyone."
Don't take a chance, see your dentist before starting a bleaching program. Get your problem areas addressed and minimize possible complications.

What the over the counter whitening companies don't want you to know is they are often only lightly effective. Professional in office and at home systems are what gives you a more dramatic effect.

Beware the color of your crowns, veneers and bonding we're set during your treatment. If you have existing dental work it might not match after whitening the teeth around it. Your Dentist can tell you for sure.

Keep reasonable expectations.
No matter what you might see in the media your teeth should never be whiter than the whites of your eyes. Remember the teeth you see on a the cover of a web site or magazine are often altered after the fact and not real.

Remember the best way to keep you smile white is prevention. Avoid smoking, coffee tea wine and other things that can stain your teeth.

Let us help with your whitening process. Call Cosmetic Dental Associates at 713-781-2800 to get started.

Are Silver Fillings a Problem?

WHAT IS AN AMALGAM (SILVER) FILLING?
Silver fillings are a combination (or an amalgam) of mercury, silver, copper, tin & other trace metals. These metals mix to form an alloy used for many years to fix cavities.

For decades silver fillings were the standard of care in dentistry for restoring decayed teeth. At Cosmetic Dental Associates we no longer use this type of restoration. We prefer the tooth-colored composite resin fillings.

WHY WE DON’T USE SILVER FILLINGS!
Amalgam (silver) restorations are not bonded to the tooth like composite fillings are, so they do nothing to strengthen teeth.

In fact, studies have shown that amalgam (silver) restorations weaken the tooth once it has been compromised by a cavity and accompanying loss of healthy tooth structure.

Silver fillings require additional removal of healthy tooth (when compared to composite restorations) to make a strong connection with your mouth.

Over time the components within the silver filling expand and contract with changes in temperature and it is often common to see cracks and fractures in both the filling and tooth it's self.

Want to check on any silver fillings you might have? Call us at (713) 781-2800. Financing is available.

New Study Shows Great Smile Equals Happier Life

The smile is is the symbol that was rated with the highest positive emotional content. Once the smiling muscles in our face contract, there is a positive feedback loop that now goes back to the brain and reinforces our feeling of joy. To put it better:
“Smiling stimulates our brain’s reward mechanisms in a way that even chocolate, a well-regarded pleasure-inducer, cannot match.”

In short: our brain feels good and tells us to smile, we smile and tell our brain it feels good and so forth. And your brain keeps track of your smiles, kind of like a smile scorecard. It knows how often you've smiled and which overall emotional state you are in therefore.

Smiling reduces stress that your body and mind feel, similar to getting good sleep, according to recent studies.

Smiling helps to generate more positive emotions within you. That’s why we often feel happier around children – they smile more. On average, they smile 400 times a day. Happy adults still smile 40-50 times a day but the average is half of that.
Why does this matter? Smiling leads to decrease in the stress-induced hormones that negatively affect your physical and mental health, say the latest studies.
The number one factor leading to an individual smiling more is it's appearance and their overall dental health. We naturally hide what we're embarrassed by. This leads to a negative feedback loop similar to the positive one listed above.

Want to change your life for the better in as fast a way as possible? Change your smile! You won't believe the overall impact is has on your life. Call us at (713) 781-2800. Financing is available.

Customize your teeth! Change your smile "LOOK". Molly can show you how.

Back in 1990 Dr. Davis did an extensive makeover project with a young lady named Molly. The goal was to show the variety of "looks" we offer to personalize your smile.

These exact same "looks" still apply today! We thought it would be interesting to visit Molly again after all these years plus remind people of the variety of smile makeovers that are possible with our practice.
  1.  In the case of Molly Rentz, Dr. Davis started out with the "NATURAL LOOK" for her - "We just filled in the spaces," he explains.
  2. Look number two is the "SPORTY LOOK". The cuspids are more pointed and the teeth are more square," Dr. Davis notes.
  3. The "EXECUTIVE LOOK" calls for "harder lines, where the teeth are square and even, and you have a very full, Farrah Fawcett smile. Even is an older look."
  4. For the final go-round, Dr. Davis gave Molly Rentz the "GLAMOUR LOOK "where the laterals are shorter, softer rounded … a more delicate smile," he says.

Typically, women want all their teeth the same length," says Dr. Davis. "When they come in, that's what they usually ask for, because models look that way. We tell them it's actually a more masculine look for most, but if that's what they want, no problem"

It was quite a project, but the photography session showed exactly how she looked with each type of bonding. Who said dentists never have any fun?

Today Molly is a lovely 39 year old lady living in the Houston area, enjoying a wonderful smile from CDA. We helped her and can do the same for you.

ANNOUNCEMENT - The latest news from Cosmetic Dental Associates

Dear Friends and Family,

Two years ago I made the decision that my practice had grown to the point that I needed to hire an associate doctor to ensure that I could continue to meet my goal of providing excellent oral health care, in a
timely manner, with the best customer service possible. As you know, I am concerned about whom I like to work with and it is very important to me to have a quality oriented fun person.   It is like a marriage and of course I spend more waking time here at the office than I do at home, so this is vital.

We have thoroughly enjoyed having Dr Magruder in our office and we will miss him for sure. His positive attitude and vibrant personality made him a real joy to be around and big asset to our staff. I know you join me in an enthusiastic best wishes for Dr. Magruder and a fond farewell. Dr Magruder is buying a practice in Galveston and is looking forward to fishing in the Galveston area.

The last year proved that having an associate in the office definitely helps me provide the high level of treatment and service that you deserve. Therefore, I would like for you to share in my excitement as I announce the addition of Dr Colt Riley as our new associate. Colt grew up in West Houston attending Second Baptist Church and graduating from Stratford High School.  He then attended The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Dental School here in Houston receiving his DDS degree in May of this year.

Dr. Riley is extremely personable and very bright.  Not to mention that he is 6’6” which would make any Texan proud.  I feel very fortunate to have found him to fill this role in our office.  I look forward to introducing him to you at your next visit.

Please be assured that I have no plans to retire or slow down any time soon as I love being a dentist and I want to practice as long as I can.  Dr. Riley will be under my direct supervision on all treatment and we will discuss and design any treatment necessary.  Being right out of school he of course needs some patients.  If you know of anyone in need of excellent dental care please send them our way.

I want to thank you for being part of our “dental family” and for the confidence you have shown in me and the support you have given my practice. The wonderful relationships I have been fortunate to build with my patients and their families are what I cherish most about my job. I look forward to many more years of practice and will continue to work hard to earn your trust and friendship as well as the trust of all the families yet to come.  We want to be the best dental team you have ever been to!

Warmest Regards,

Spiker

How much can teeth whitening help my smile?

There's no one standard system in the dental field to measure and determine tooth color. Nor is there an exact answer to how white your teeth can become-every person's situation is unique. One commonly used reference tool, however, is a shade guide.

One of the more common shade guides divides tooth color into four basic shade ranges:

Tooth ShadesTooth Shades
A (reddish brown)
B (reddish yellow)
C (gray)
D (reddish gray)
A.Red - Brown

Within each range are different levels of darkness — which results in a chart detailed enough for almost everyone to find their exact tooth color on the guide.
To use such a guide, simply match your current tooth color to the corresponding color on the chart. This gives you a starting point as you determine how much whiter you'd like your teeth to be.

How white should your teeth become? That depends.
There's no one right way to whiten your teeth. Some people want an instant and dramatic change, while others prefer more gradual whitening such as the type that results from a whitening toothpaste or gel. Final results depend on your natural tooth color, how stubborn any stains are and the treatment you choose.

A change of just two or three shades can make a noticeable difference in just about anyone's smile. While whitening can occasionally change tooth color nine or more shades, the majority of people who whiten their teeth see a change of between two and seven shades.

Each procedure has its advantages and disadvantages. The most effective treatment is Laser whitening and other in-office bleaching procedures which may produce the most dramatic results.

The power of a good smile.

Smiling plays a very important role in maintaining and improving your health, both physically and emotionally as discussed in a recent Wiki How article. As Phyllis Diller once said: A smile is a curve that sets everything straight, and the smile can help you to stand out, improve people's perception of your attractiveness and relieve any stress you might be experiencing.

If you're still not convinced, there is evidence that those who smile often live an average of 7 years longer than those who rarely conjure a regular smile.

A fun way to improve your physical and mental well-being, the smile is free of charge and always available by choice and this article explores the ways you can smile to be healthy.

Stress is easily shown in our faces. Smiling prevents people from looking too tired or overwhelmed. When you're stressed, try to put on a smile, as it will make you feel happy, and you will appear happy. Your feelings of stress will be reduced as the Endorphins associated with smiling are erased and the infectiousness of your smile will help to make others happy.

Warning signs of oral cancer

Oral "Ororpharyngeal" Cancer is a scary but real factor in the health of your mouth. It can affect any area of the Oropharyngeal cavity including the lips, gum tissue, check lining, tongue, jaw the hard or soft palate & throat. It often starts as a tiny, unnoticed white or red spot or sore anywhere in the mouth or throat.
During your dental visit, your dentist can talk to you about your health history and examine these areas for signs of oral cancer. Regular visits to your dentist can improve the chances that any suspicious changes in your oral health will be caught early, at a time when cancer can be treated more easily. Dr. Davis provides a free Oral Cancer screening with every patient exam.

The symptoms of Oral Cancer to watch out for can include:

+ Sores that bleed easily or do not heal

+ Thick or hard spot or lump

+ Roughened or crusted area

+ Numbness, pain or tenderness

+ Change in the way your teeth fit together.

Make sure to tell your dentist about any problems you have when chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving your tongue or jaw. Regular dental check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are essential in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions.

Five easy ideas for big health payoffs.

Does it ever feel like you have to spend hours and hours at the gym, change your diet dramatically to reap any rewards in the health department. Small changes can have significant health payoffs.

1. Floss more often.
A simple piece of nylon string can have dramatic effects on a woman's overall health. Flossing is one of the easiest, quickest ways to remove bad bacteria from your body.

2. Eat every 2 to 3 hours during the day.
Think you’re a saint for going on a long hunger strike at work? If you’re imagining thinner thighs as a result, don’t. You’re likely making your metabolism crazy. Eat when they’re hungry, which often translates to three meals and at least two snacks per day.

3. Make your coffee at home.
If a trip to Starbucks is as much of a morning ritual as showering and blow-drying your hair, you might find this advice crazy, but health experts like Gregory J.E. Ladas, author of the book The Couch Potato Diet, say it will not only save you money but possibly hundreds of calories.

4. Wear a pedometer.
Becoming aware of how much you move is motivation to move more.  It also may be fun to track how active (or inactive) you are each day. To boost your physical and mental health, wear a pedometer and challenge yourself to increase your steps every day.

5. Give yourself a compliment.
The key to feeling happy, confident and proud of your body—flaws and all? Focus on what your body can do, rather than on how it looks. Too often, we pay attention to how our bodies appear, rather than what they allow us to do.

If I have Heart Disease, how does it affect Oral Health?

Overall the data indicates that chronic gum disease may contribute to the development of heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death in both men and women. How does this happen? Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can affect conditions outside your mouth.

In heart disease, one theory is that gum disease can cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream where they attach to the fatty deposits in the heart blood vessels. This condition can cause blood clots and may lead to heart attacks.

Are There Special Heart Related Requirements to Maintain Proper Oral Health?
To maintain the best oral health, you should:
- Establish and maintain a healthy mouth, brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist.
- Make sure your dentist knows you have a heart problem.
- Carefully follow instructions and use prescription medications as directed.

Am I at Risk if Dental Procedures are Performed?
If you have certain preexisting heart conditions, you may be at risk for developing bacterial endocarditis — an infection of the heart's inner lining or the valves. Anytime there is bleeding in the mouth, certain oral bacteria can enter the blood stream and may settle on abnormal heart valves or tissue weakened by an existing heart problem or heart condition. In these cases, the infection can damage or even destroy heart valves or tissue.

There are precautions you need to take if you have any of the following conditions:
- Artificial (prosthetic) heart valves
- A history of endocarditis
- Congenital heart or heart valve defects
- Heart valves damaged (scarred) by conditions such as rheumatic fever
- Mitral valve prolapse with a murmur
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Be sure to tell your dentist if you have a heart condition, and what, if any, medications you are taking for it. Your dentist will record important health information in your record and coordinate treatment with your physician.

We see an alarming dental health problem...

It has come to our attention that some of our patients are postponing their regular dental cleaning and checkup appointments.  That is just like not changing the oil in your car-it saves a few bucks now but could be much more expensive in the future.  Most adults should see their dentist for a regular cleaning and check up every six months.

People at a greater risk for oral diseases should have dental check ups more than twice a year, which means about every 3-4 months.  Tobacco and alcohol use,  diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene and certain medical conditions are some of the many factors that your dentist takes into consideration when deciding how often you need your dental cleaning and check up.

We are also seeing more and more patients that are taking multiple medications for their general health such as Osteoporosis medications, Statins for high cholesterol, multiple meds for high blood pressure etc.  We have had many patients on these drugs for years and all of a sudden they develop a dry mouth.  This condition can cause serious damage to your mouth.  We have had about 4 patients on medications that skipped their regular cleaning and the next time we saw them they had 10-20 cavities caused from the dry mouth.  If you notice a dry mouth please contact your physician and us immediately to see how we can prevent this devastating damage.
Going to your regular check ups will help to keep your gums and teeth healthy as well as detect any problems in the early stages and of course that will save money and grief.  Lately we have had several patients that haven’t been in over the last year or so and then they call with a toothache, cracked tooth, massive decay etc. which now costs them in some cases thousands of dollars and lots of grief.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
